Key Characteristics & Sound Profile
- Design & Build: Features large grey ribbed plates, dual support rods to minimize microphonics, and a large round/halo getter ring. They were produced from the mid-1960s onward. [1, 2, 3, 4]
- Tone: Known for a natural, open, and dynamic sound with solid, focused bass definition, balanced mids, and smooth, extended highs without getting overly bright or harsh. [1, 2, 3]
- Gain & Application: They offer strong gain and high resolution, making them a popular choice for vintage guitar amplifiers (such as Marshall and Fender) as well as Hi-Fi preamps and phono stages. [1, 2, 3]
- Alternative Branding: Because Tungsram supplied tubes widely, you may find original Hungarian-made Tungsram ECC83 tubes rebranded under names like RCA, National, Edicron, or Mullard. [1, 2, 3]
