Key Characteristics & Identification
- Design/Type: 9-pin Noval double-triode, functioning as a low-gain to medium-gain preamp or phase inverter valve. [1, 2]
- The Diamond Mark: Authentic West German Telefunken ECC81 tubes feature a small diamond-shaped mold indentation molded into the glass base between the pins ("diamond bottom"). [1, 2]
- Sonic Signature: Known for pronounced, silky highs and great micro-detail, though some users note the mid-range can sound slightly leaner or more neutral compared to warmer tubes like Mullard. [1, 2]
- RFT / East German Alternatives: Post-production or eastern-block equivalents were produced by RFT in East Germany for Telefunken after original West German lines closed, which lack the glass-bottom diamond logo. [1]
