Key Characteristics & Variants
- Design & Cathode: Features a direct-heating thorium-tungsten cathode capable of high electron emission, designed to minimize distortion under heavy signal input. [1, 2, 3]
-
Common Types / Generations:
- Shuguang Standard / 845: Classic high-voltage power output tube.
- Shuguang 845B: Uses a carbon plate and mica-free/hydride graphite anode design with increased internal spacing (up to 35mm from anode to grid leading wires) to improve high-voltage insulation and prevent stem air leaks.
- Shuguang 845C / 845-T ("Natural Sound"): Performance-tuned variants featuring upgraded plate materials and cleaner sonic attributes (though note that some C-variants have higher plate dissipation ratings that require compatible amplifier designs). [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6]
- Sound Profile: Known for a fast, clean presentation, good tonal balance, a slightly forward midrange, and a large, layered soundstage. [1, 2]
Comparison of Popular Shuguang 845 Tube Variants
| Variant | Plate / Construction Type | Primary Characteristics | Best Suited For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shuguang Standard 845 | Standard mesh/metal structure | Clean sound, warm midrange, traditional 845 performance. | Standard 845 single-ended amplifiers. |
| Shuguang 845B | Carbon plate, mica-free, graphite anode | Enhanced high-voltage insulation (35mm gap), handles high dissipation well. | High-voltage 845 amplifiers needing stability and low distortion. |
| Shuguang 845C | Iron/metal plate variant | Sweet presentation, higher plate dissipation (approx. 65–70W). | Amps rated to handle higher plate dissipation specifications. |
| Shuguang 845-T ("Natural Sound") | Carbon/treated 'T' series upgrade | Substantial sonic refinement over base models with improved micro-detail. | Audiophiles looking for an upper-tier upgrade in 845 sockets. |
