Key Characteristics & Sound Profile
- Design: A dual-triode design containing two independent valves in a single glass envelope. [1]
- Tone: Widely praised for rich, textured, and "juicy" mids without harsh or overly bright highs, making it a favorite in hifi preamplifiers, phono stages, and vintage/guitar amplifiers. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
- Origins: Original New Old Stock (NOS) versions were famously manufactured in the United Kingdom (such as the Blackburn factory) as well as related Philips-group facilities. Military and industrial variants like the CV4003 / M8136 (box-plate construction) and CV491 offer different plate structures and tighter tolerances. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
Options Available on the Market
Original New Old Stock (NOS): Vintage British-made Mullard ECC82 or CV4003/CV491 tubes. They are increasingly rare and command higher collector and audiophile prices (ranging roughly from $100 to over $500 depending on the specific era, box style, and testing grade). [1, 2, 3]
New Production Reissues: Modern factory-made Mullard-branded 12AU7/ECC82 reissues (typically around $26 to $36) provide a dependable, budget-friendly entry point for modern and vintage gear. [1, 2]
