The Genalex Gold Lion KT88 is an 8-pin octal beam power tetrode vacuum tube originally introduced in 1957 by the Marconi-Osram Valve Co. (MOV) in the UK, widely celebrated as the "King of Power Tubes". [1]
History and Reissue
Original Production: Produced by GEC/MOV in the UK until production ceased in the early 1980s, making vintage New Old Stock (NOS) originals rare and expensive. [1, 2]
Modern Reissue: New Sensor Corporation currently manufactures the reissue version in the Reflektor factory in Saratov, Russia. It features gold-plated grid wires, carbonized screen grids, and a tri-alloy clad plate structure. [1, 2]
Performance and Characteristics
Sound Profile: Known for delivering a full, warm midrange, extended high frequencies, and deep, powerful low-end response with low distortion. [1, 2]
Applications: Frequently used in high-fidelity (hi-fi) stereo amplifiers and heavy-duty guitar/bass amplifiers (such as the McIntosh MC275, Dynaco Mark III, and Marshall Major). [1, 2]
Electrical Specs: Features a 6.3V heater filament and a 35W to 42W plate/anode dissipation rating.
