The Genalex Gold Lion KT66 is a current-production, high-performance power beam tetrode vacuum tube manufactured in Russia as an exact physical and electrical replica of the original vintage clear-glass KT66. [1, 2, 3]
Key Features & Sound Profile
Tone & Application: Famous for delivering the classic "Bluesbreaker" tone found in early Marshall guitar amplifiers and Eric Clapton's signature sound, as well as vintage 1950s and 1960s hi-fi audio systems (such as Heathkit W-5M and Leak amplifiers). [1, 2]
Sonic Characteristics: Offers a full, rich sound with an enhanced bass response, smooth midrange, shimmering top-end frequencies, and a 3D holographic soundstage. [1, 2, 3]
Build Quality: Features heavy clear glass, ruggedized internal plates, gold-plated grid wires, and triple getters for a superior vacuum and high headroom. [1]
Compatibility Note: It serves as a British-style alternative to the 6L6GC / 5881, though it draws a higher heater current (around 1.3A per tube compared to 900mA for a standard 6L6). You should always check your amplifier's power transformer capacity and bias compatibility before swapping tubes. [1, 2, 3]
