The Mullard EL34 is a renowned power pentode vacuum tube famous for its warm, musical tone, rich midrange, and smooth high-frequency response. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6]
Vintage vs. Modern Reissues
Vintage NOS (New Old Stock) Mullard EL34: Originally manufactured starting in 1949—most famously the XF2 series produced in the 1960s at the Blackburn, England plant (marked by a "B" and XF2 code). Vintage units feature double O-getter rings and welded plates, commanding high collector prices ($300+ per tube when available). [1, 2, 3]
Modern Reissue Mullard EL34: Produced in Russia (Reflector / New Sensor factory), these modern-production tubes are widely available and serve as an affordable, reliable drop-in replacement for guitar and hifi amplifiers. According to community consensus on diyaudio, current production Mullard EL34s differ from the original Philips/Blackburn construction and are closer in design to RFT EL34 clones
